Students and parents in Lagos, Ogun, and other states are frustrated as the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) is withholding results for students due to unpaid fees by state governments for the 2024 WASSCE. The large debt is causing delays in result release, which risks affecting students’ admissions to higher education and is leading to emotional distress and lost opportunities for students.

Several schools in Lagos, including Odomola Secondary School, Okemagba Senior High School, and others in Epe, as well as schools in Lagos Island, have yet to receive WASSCE results. In Ogun State, a parent known as “Mummy Twins” is distressed because WAEC has not released the results for her twin daughters from Iganmode Grammar School 2, despite her efforts to resolve the issue. She is worried and frustrated about not being able to access her children’s exam results.

In Lagos, Mr. Tunde, whose child took the exam at Epe Senior Grammar School, expressed frustration because the school refused his offer to pay the exam fees directly to obtain his daughter’s results. The school stated that the delay in releasing results was due to the state government’s failure to settle outstanding fees with WAEC.

Mrs. Bamidele is frustrated because, despite providing all required documentation and meeting school requirements, her children’s WASSCE results remain inaccessible. She feels it’s unfair, especially as students from private schools have already received their results. It’s unclear if the issue is due to Ogun State’s unpaid fees for public school candidates. WAEC has not disclosed which states still owe money, exacerbating the situation and negatively impacting students.

Adebowale Bukola from Iganmode Grammar School and Olatunji David from Pakoto High School are anxiously waiting for their WASSCE results, while their peers, especially from private schools, have already received theirs. WAEC’s Head of Public Relations, Moyo Adeyegbe, stated that results are withheld until states fulfill their financial obligations, but she could not specify which states are affected. Results are released as payments are received, as evidenced by Ondo State, which received its students’ results after completing its payment.

Lagos State officials, including Omotoso and Genius Lawal, have confirmed that Lagos does not owe WAEC, stating that the state paid over N1.5 billion in examination fees in March. They challenge any claims of arrears. WAEC’s spokesperson, Moyo Adeyegbe, noted that she cannot specify which states owe money or the reasons for delays, as this information is managed by the Head of WAEC Nigeria, who is currently out of the country.
