Twenty-five students from Mshuluzane Mayisela Primary School in Bronkhorstspruit were hospitalized, suspected of food poisoning after consuming snacks from street vendors. Gauteng emergency services reported that the children’s symptoms were mild to moderate, primarily abdominal pain. Protests erupted in the area, with some residents attacking local spaza shops and burning goods in response to the incident.

Gauteng Department of Education spokesperson Steve Mabona reported that 25 pupils experienced symptoms of “body itching and stomach pain” about 30 minutes after eating snacks from street vendors. Emergency services quickly transported the affected students to medical facilities, with 22 discharged after treatment. Two were taken to private facilities by their parents, and one remains under observation at Zithobeni Clinic.

Authorities are investigating the incident to assess the safety of the food sold by vendors and to prevent future occurrences. MEC Matome Chiloane emphasized the importance of ensuring children have access to safe food and urged vigilance from parents and schools. The department is collaborating with health authorities to safeguard the well-being of students.
