FG, Japan, UNESCO Launch Digital Training for 2,000 Teachers to Build Safer Schools for Children
The Federal Government, with support from Japan and UNESCO, has initiated a digital teacher training programme to enhance the quality of education and create safer learning environments for children in Nigeria.
The three-day Master Training Workshop is anticipated to reach at least 2,000 teachers and school leaders via mobile-based learning and will focus on enhancing teachers’ skills to support children’s academic, emotional and social development.
The initiative, which is led by the Federal Ministry of Education and the Government of Japan, UNESCO-International Institute for Capacity Building in Africa, the Pan-African University and Castalia Co. Ltd. focuses particularly on the empowerment of female school leaders and inclusive education.
The participants are learning about digital literacy, artificial intelligence in education, gender responsive teaching, mental health awareness, and learner-centred approaches.
These areas are now seen as being a vital part of child safeguarding as teachers are the first point of support when children have difficulties both in and out of the classroom.
The Federal Government stated that the programme is in line with the Government’s thrust to enhance learning outcomes and increase access to lifelong learning and professional development using technology.
Education stakeholders hope that the initiative will help teachers build safer, more supportive classrooms where children can learn without barriers, with Japan providing approximately $1 million in support, and digital devices donated for implementation.
Building teacher capacity is a critical component in ensuring children’s right to quality education, positive learning experiences and supportive learning environments that foster children’s wellbeing.
