Bauchi Mother Seeks Justice for 8-Year-Old After Alleged Child Sexual Abuse by NDLEA Operative
The mother of an 8-year-old girl who was allegedly sexually abused by an operative of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) in Bauchi State has demanded justice, saying she was very concerned about the delay in the prosecution of the suspect.
The mother’s appeal was announced by her lawyer, Barrister Alkasim Mohammed, a human rights lawyer representing the African Child Development and Human Right Protection.
The counsel said the incident happened when the victim was sent to buy a sachet of water from the house of the suspect, 45-year-old Muhammad Mustapha Makama, who is a neighbour to the victim’s family. The minor was allegedly enticed and sexually assaulted by the suspect, he said.
The case was promptly reported by the victim’s mother, Salamatu Musa, at the E Division of the Bauchi State Police Command on July 5, 2026.
After the report, police arrested Makama, who reportedly has been in police custody for nearly three weeks without being charged in court.
The human rights group complained to the Bauchi State Commissioner of Police over the protracted detention without trial.
Barrister Alkasim praised the police for arresting a security man, but expressed concern about the behind-the-scenes effort by some to secure the release of the suspect.
The lawyer added that the Bauchi State Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice had already given legal advice and opinion on July 23, 2023, in favour of prosecution of the suspect, based on the available evidence, facts and medical reports.
Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) SP Nafiu Habib confirmed the arrest of the suspect and assured the public that he would be charged in court soon.
