A bill giving local school boards and charter schools control over their number of instructional days has cleared its first hurdle, passing the House Education Committee on Monday.
House Bill 65 comes in response to a New Mexico Public Education Department rule requiring a 180-day schedule for schools that fail to meet reading proficiency targets. Some small districts opposed the mandate, arguing they already met the required 1,140 instructional hours while operating on a four-day school week. A judge recently blocked the rule, but some officials want legal protections in case of an appeal.
“Districts know what’s best for their kids and their populations,” said Education Department Vice Chair Steven Carillo.
