The Coalition for Students’ Advocacy and Transformation Fund (CSATF) has condemned the recent fee hike at the University of Ibadan and criticized the Nigerian government’s commercialization of public education.

They assert that public education is a fundamental right under Section 18 of the 1999 Constitution, yet the government has failed to fulfill its obligations. The CSATF noted that Nigeria has never allocated the recommended 26% of its budget to education, with funding decreasing over the years.

The Coalition for Students’ Advocacy and Transformation Fund (CSATF) blames President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration for policies that worsen the commercialization of education, such as urging universities to find alternative funding and introducing the Student Loan Act, which burdens students financially.

The recent fee increase at the University of Ibadan led to significant protests in July, and despite student demands, the Governing Council approved the hike on August 29, 2024. This sparked further demonstrations, especially after the university administration ordered students to vacate their residences and cut essential services like electricity to intimidate them. As the payment deadline approaches, many students are anxious about meeting the new financial demands.

The Coalition for Students’ Advocacy and Transformation Fund (CSATF) criticized the Student Union leadership, led by Aweda Bolaji, for failing to effectively represent students and allegedly collaborating with university management. They condemned the administration’s decision to restrict access to residence halls based on fee payment status, which excludes students from academic activities and creates barriers to education for those unable to afford the increased fees.

In response, the CSATF has called for a protest on September 20, 2024, urging students, parents, staff unions, and the community to advocate for accessible and adequately funded public education. The coalition emphasizes that education should be treated as a right, not a privilege, and calls for immediate reforms to support all students.
