Ondo Government Withholds WASSCE Results of 17 Students Over Viral ‘Sign-Out’ Rampage

The Ondo State Government has withheld the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) results and testimonials of 17 graduating secondary school students following their involvement in what authorities described as unruly conduct during their final examinations.
The decision followed a viral video circulating on social media platforms, including TikTok and Facebook, showing students from three schools in Akure engaging in disruptive celebrations after completing their final exam paper. The schools identified include Oyemekun Grammar School, Aquinas Secondary School, and CAC Grammar School.
According to the Ministry of Education, the affected students were seen tearing their uniforms and chanting during what is commonly known as “sign-out” celebrations. Officials said the behaviour violated school discipline standards and undermined the values expected within the education system.
As part of the disciplinary action, the state government announced that the names of the 17 students will be entered into a “black book” maintained by their respective schools. The ministry also directed principals to strengthen monitoring systems to prevent similar incidents in the future.
For students not in their final class but involved in the incident, the government ordered immediate expulsion. School officials have also been queried for failing to properly supervise students during the celebrations.
Education authorities stressed that while celebrations are allowed, they must be conducted in a safe and respectful manner. They warned that actions influenced by social media trends must not compromise discipline in schools.
The Ministry of Education further called on parents to guide their children on appropriate behaviour during school activities. It also emphasized ongoing efforts to protect the integrity of the education system while promoting responsible conduct among students.
Affected students and their parents have been summoned to the ministry for formal disciplinary procedures.
