Maternal mortality rates in northern Nigeria, where over half of the country’s population resides, surpass the national average, according to Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF). Nigeria ranks third globally in the likelihood of maternal death during childbirth, after South Sudan and Chad, with over 1,000 maternal deaths per 100,000 live births annually. Jigawa State faces challenges due to limited access to antenatal and delivery care, resulting in high rates of home births and maternal complications. To address this, MSF collaborates with the Jigawa State government and the Ministry of Health to provide comprehensive emergency obstetrics, newborn care, and fistula care at Jahun General Hospital’s Maternity Department.
