Physical Education Coming Back to Schools as a full Subject in South Africa

< 1 min read

South Africa’s Sports, Arts, and Culture Minister, Gayton McKenzie, is shifting the focus of sports transformation from “equality of outcome” to “equality of access.” The new approach emphasizes early participation and training in sports, aiming to improve access for young people, especially from underprivileged communities. McKenzie highlighted the need to revive Physical Education (PE) in schools and reestablish school sports leagues, addressing a gap that became evident during a recent national School Sport Indaba. The existing Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Department of Sports and the Department of Basic Education, which aimed to improve school sports, expired in May 2023. A new MoU is under discussion to create sustainable sports leagues and reintegrate PE as a significant subject in schools.
