I’ve taught kids in multiple countries. I believe these 3 life skills are more important to teach students than anything academic.

During my time in the Australian education system, I appreciated how brilliantly health, relationships, science, and literacy were taught together. However, I noticed a glaring issue: the curriculum significantly lacked representation of Indigenous Australian peoples and their history.

Later, in the British education system, I was impressed by the depth and thoroughness of grammar, maths, and history lessons. But there was a major drawback: the curriculum was so packed that it created unrealistic expectations, making the experience incredibly stressful for both students and staff.

When I moved to Switzerland and began teaching at a Swedish international school, I encountered something entirely different. The Swedish system delays formal academic skills like reading and writing until the age of 7. At first, this approach felt unfamiliar, but I quickly understood its value. By focusing less on academics in the early years, children have the freedom to explore who they are and the world they live in.

This taught me something profound: academic knowledge can be learned at any stage of life, but soft skills like self-awareness, collaboration, and emotional intelligence are essential to develop early.
