The Role of Awareness in Global Disarmament Efforts

Every March 5, the International Day for disarmament and non-proliferation awareness is observed to raise awareness on arms disarmament, especially among youths and children. The goal is to create awareness of the importance of education as a vehicle for peace, security, disarmament, and non-proliferation. This day serves to increase public knowledge and understanding of disarmament concerns, particularly among children.
Why Does Disarmament and Non-proliferation Awareness Matter?
To maintain peace and security, disarmament and armament restriction is a top priority for the United Nations. There has been a rise in arm reserves, deployment, and illegal gun trafficking, and efforts made to maintain peace are sometimes jeopardized. In 2022, global military spending increased to $2.24 trillion, and more than 12,000 nuclear weapons are a threat to international security. In recent years, the organisation has paid more attention to new and developing weapon technologies, which present a threat to international security. This is because weapons of mass destruction, such as nuclear weapons, are a threat to humanity.
Origin of International Day for disarmament and non-proliferation awareness day
International Disarmament and Non-Proliferation Awareness Day was established by the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in 2022 to promote education and advocacy on disarmament issues. The aim is to enhance global awareness of the rising threats from nuclear, chemical, and biological weapons.
The initiative began in 2021 when a proposal was introduced at the UNGA. On December 7, 2022, the resolution was officially adopted, designating March 5 as the annual observance, and it was first observed in 2023.
Education as a tool for disarmament and non-proliferation
Education is a powerful tool that brings about peace and security, and it achieves this by encouraging dialogue and understanding between nations and individuals. Also, through education, we can teach children peaceful resolution, thereby shaping their minds at an early stage. When children learn to respect and have empathy towards one another, it reduces conflict, prejudice, and extremism. When children learn about various cultures and learn to respect diverse perspectives, they are most likely to choose the noble path of peace to resolve issues rather than war or violence.
A society with educated people enjoys stability, economic growth, and social cohesion. Strong educational systems are a bedrock of growth and stability. That is why the government should prioritize education. Countries with strong education systems tend to experience reduced conflicts and violence. The reason is not far-fetched: education is a leveller; it gives access to opportunities and reduces inequality and poverty. Education helps people think critically and spot manipulation that could lead to conflict.
Through education, children learn the negative effects of weapons and their proliferation and shun violence. Education equally plays a crucial role in preventing the spread of nuclear weapons. Scientific and ethical education ensures that people are informed about the risks associated with nuclear proliferation.
By empowering children and the society at large, education is the vehicle for lasting peace and security. It promotes dialogue over violence and the reliance on weapons as a means to resolve issues. By this, we are creating a society where children will not only grow to embrace peace and negotiations but a stable society where they can thrive as God’s precious children.
