Anger Mounts as Oyo WAEC Candidates Write Exam in Darkness Amid Security Concerns

Concerns are growing over the protection of children’s right to quality education after candidates sitting for the 2026 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) in Oyo State reportedly wrote their Agricultural Science practical examination in darkness.
A video obtained by our correspondent showed students using lanterns and mobile phone flashlights to complete the examination late at night. The situation reportedly followed delays in the delivery of examination materials to the centre.
The incident has sparked criticism from parents and education advocates. Many argue that students cannot perform at their best under such difficult conditions. They warn that poor examination environments could affect candidates’ concentration, confidence and overall performance.
Education experts note that every child deserves access to safe and conducive learning conditions. This right extends to examinations, which play a key role in determining students’ academic progress and future opportunities.
Beyond the academic concerns, the development has also raised questions about student welfare. Many candidates reportedly remained at the examination centre for several hours while waiting for the papers to arrive. As a result, some were forced to sit for the practical examination after dark.
Reacting to the situation, cleric Pastor S.O. Solarin condemned the delay and called for accountability from examination authorities. According to him, keeping students at examination centres late into the night is unacceptable, especially amid growing security concerns across the country.
He stressed that children should not face unnecessary risks while pursuing their education. Cases of kidnapping and violent attacks in some communities have heightened fears among parents.
The incident has renewed calls for education authorities to improve examination logistics. Stakeholders say every child deserves a fair, safe and supportive environment in which to learn and demonstrate their abilities.
