JAMB Releases Underage UTME Results, But Most Candidates Still Face Admission Hurdle
The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board has released the 2026 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination results of candidates who were below the prescribed admission age.
However, the release of the results does not automatically make these candidates eligible for admission into Nigerian tertiary institutions.
JAMB considers a candidate underage if the person will be below 16 years old by September 30, 2026. The board generally requires candidates to have reached the prescribed minimum age before they can be admitted into tertiary institutions.
JAMB said exceptionally brilliant underage candidates may, however, be considered for admission through a special assessment process.
This means that sitting for the UTME and receiving a result does not by itself guarantee a place in a university, polytechnic or other tertiary institution.
The age requirement is intended to ensure that students entering higher education have attained the required level of maturity and academic readiness.
For younger candidates who perform strongly in the UTME, the special assessment provides an opportunity for the board to determine whether they meet the conditions for consideration despite being below the prescribed age.
Parents and guardians of underage candidates have therefore been advised to understand the distinction between obtaining a UTME result and meeting the requirements for tertiary admission.
The development highlights the importance of balancing academic ability with children’s age, readiness and overall educational development as young candidates seek to progress into higher education.
