Equal Opportunity: FG Sponsors UTME for 37 Visually-Impaired Candidates in Bauchi

In a major push for inclusive education, the Federal Government, through the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), has sponsored 37 visually-impaired students to take the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) in Bauchi State.
Speaking at the UTME Centre for the Blind at the University of Maiduguri, Professor Hadiza Bazza, Deputy Coordinator, revealed that the students, drawn from Bauchi, Borno, Gombe, and Yobe States, are part of JAMB’s Equal Opportunity Group, launched in 2017 under the leadership of Registrar Prof. Ishaq Oloyede.
She stressed the need for greater awareness at the grassroots, urging parents and communities to support the educational aspirations of children with disabilities.
Bauchi State Commissioner for Education, Dr. Lawal Mohammed, praised the initiative and pledged more state-level efforts to spread awareness. His counterpart, Commissioner for Information Usman Shehu, lamented low enrollment despite investments in schools, and promised a joint awareness campaign to boost educational participation, especially for children with special needs.
