Abia Government to Dismiss Teachers Over Absenteeism

The Abia State Government has issued a strong warning to public school teachers across the state, cautioning them against acts of misconduct, negligence, and dereliction of duty.
The warning was delivered by the Executive Chairman of the Abia State Universal Basic Education Board (ASUBEB), Mrs. Lydia Onuoha, during a press briefing held on Tuesday in Umuahia.
According to Mrs. Onuoha, the government is deeply concerned about the increasing cases of irregular attendance and absenteeism among some teachers in public schools, despite the substantial efforts of Governor Alex Otti’s administration to improve teachers’ welfare.
She described the situation as unacceptable, noting that it constitutes a gross violation of professional ethics and the trust placed in educators to shape the future of young learners.
She emphasized that any teacher found wanting would face serious disciplinary actions in line with the Public Service Rules and the Teachers’ Code of Conduct. Such measures, she said, could include queries, suspension, and outright dismissal, depending on the severity of the misconduct.
The ASUBEB chairman highlighted several steps already taken by the Otti administration to support teachers, including prompt and consistent payment of salaries, the approval of long-overdue promotions and leave allowances, and the implementation of the 27.5% Teachers Special Salary (TSS).
As part of its new enforcement strategy, ASUBEB announced that it will be working closely with local government education authorities and school-based management committees to monitor compliance.
This will include the introduction of biometric attendance systems in schools, unannounced inspection visits, and the submission of monthly attendance reports by head teachers.
Mrs. Onuoha reiterated the government’s commitment to raising educational standards and ensuring accountability in the public school system. She made it clear that these actions are not punitive, but necessary steps to uphold the integrity of the teaching profession.
This is to ensure that children in Abia State public schools receive the quality education they deserve, in an environment where their teachers are present, committed, and accountable.
