Hardship: Proprietors Beg Parents not to Withdraw Students

The National Association of Proprietors of Private Schools in Nigeria is concerned about parents randomly withdrawing their children from private schools due to difficulties in paying tuition amid ongoing economic hardships. These challenges, driven by hyperinflation and the removal of fuel subsidies, have made it increasingly hard for families to cope with rising living costs. This situation has sparked a nationwide movement, #EndBadGovernance, as citizens call for change. Recently, the Nigeria Labour Congress and the Organised Private Sector demanded a reversal of the new fuel pricing, which has worsened economic conditions.

Private school owners are facing challenges as economic hardships compel parents to withdraw their children due to unaffordable school fees. To maintain student enrollment, they often have to plead with parents and negotiate pay cuts. Dr. Samira Jibir, President of NAPPS, emphasized that the difficulties are impacting everyone, including school proprietors and teachers, necessitating some sacrifices.

Dr. Samira Jibir highlighted that economic hardships are affecting everyone, making it impossible to force parents to keep their children in unaffordable schools. Some schools have ceased transportation services due to rising fuel prices, while others have increased fares with parents’ cooperation.

The Chairman of NAPPS in the Federal Capital Territory, Ruth Agboola, echoed these concerns, noting that schools are also losing teachers to other jobs or petty trading due to financial pressures. She mentioned that while some parents have switched to lower-paying schools, the situation is impacting educators across the board.
