Right from childhood to adulthood, happiness is a necessity in our lives. Today is a call to spread love, positivity, and joy to the world around us.

Background

In its resolution 66/281 of July 12, 2012, the UN General Assembly declared March 20 to be the International Day of Happiness, acknowledging the significance of happiness and well-being as universal aspirations and goals in the lives of people everywhere and the necessity of incorporating them into public policy goals. It also acknowledged the need for a more balanced, equitable, and inclusive approach to economic growth that supports happiness, poverty eradication, sustainable development, and the welfare of all people.

International Day of Happiness Theme for 2025

The theme for International Day of Happiness 2025 is “Caring and Sharing,” and it emphasizes the importance of love, kindness, and positivity in our daily lives. This theme emphasizes how sharing and simple acts of kindness can impact our lives.

The Significance of Happiness in Children

Childhood is the formative years of a child. By the time they are three years old, 80% of their brain have developed. At this young age, a child begins to understand emotions and form friendships. They can express emotions, and their parents and caregivers should be kind, patient, and loving. This is because a child’s growth and development are connected to their health.

When children are loved and cared for, they will grow and explore the world. Learning and friendship are fostered by positive connection and emotional support, whereas inadequate affection or attention has long-lasting consequences. According to research, children need loving interaction to develop their brains and form secure emotional bonds and great friendships.

Signs of Happiness in Children

To understand what makes a child happy, you should observe their interactions and behavior daily. Happiness readily shows on children’s faces. They tend to laugh, smile, and play. Happy children love to explore and ask questions. They play with friends, family, and caretakers. Children are emotionally secure and loved if they readily accept holding hands, embraces, and cuddles.

Parents Are Key to a Child’s Happiness

One of the greatest gifts parents can give their children is spending quality time with them. With the Internet and social media, many parents are distracted. Social media and mobile phones have greatly affected family life and valuable moments of connection.

According to studies, excessive use of screens by parents harms a child’s social and emotional development. By setting aside time for play, and conversation, parents can create a loving environment that promotes joy and happiness in their children.

How to Participate in World Happiness Day

  • Practice Gratitude: Write down your blessings and consider the good things in life.
  • Be Kind: Do random deeds of kindness, such as lending a hand to a neighbor, making a charitable donation, or helping a friend who is in need.
  • Connect with others: Spend quality time with family and loved ones.
  • Encourage mental health: Encourage people to discuss mental health and wellbeing.
  • Spread positivity online: Post encouraging content on social media that uplifts people rather than hate.

Conclusion

The International Day of Happiness serves as a reminder that happiness is a journey that begins in childhood rather than a single event. Parents and caregivers can contribute to the upbringing of happy children if they recognize the importance of happiness in children, the signs, and intentionally create joyful moments. Let’s take advantage of this opportunity to spread joy, love, and happiness which is a good foundation for a happy future for our children.
