Parents Sue TikTok Over Children’s Deaths, Accuse Platform of ‘No Compassion’

Four British families are suing TikTok, claiming the platform played a role in the wrongful deaths of their children. The parents believe their children died after attempting the “blackout challenge,” a viral trend on the platform in 2022.

The lawsuit, filed in Delaware, alleges TikTok violated its own rules by failing to prevent the spread of dangerous content. The parents say they want accountability and access to data that could provide clarity on their children’s deaths.

TikTok has stated that it prohibits harmful content and has blocked searches related to the challenge. However, the families say they have received only corporate statements with “no compassion.”

One parent, Ellen Roome, has been pushing for legislation to allow parents access to their deceased children’s social media accounts. Another, Lisa Kenevan, questioned why TikTok has withheld data, asking, “How can they sleep at night?”
