Ernestina Quainoo, a 53-year-old Ghanaian teacher working in the UK, has been banned from teaching for life. She was found to have smuggled a 14-year-old African child into Britain in 2008, effectively to be used as a “slave”. Quainoo lied about her child trafficking conviction when she obtained a teaching job in 2019.
Her criminal past was discovered in December 2022 when a colleague saw a newspaper report about her history. Quainoo and her husband Samuel brought the child to the UK in 2008, promising education and a job. Instead, they reportedly forced the girl to cook, clean, and babysit their children for 18 months.
In 2008, Samuel Quainoo was jailed for 18 months. Ernestina Quainoo received a suspended sentence for assisting unlawful immigration. The school learned about her past in December 2022 through news articles. Quainoo was suspended due to safeguarding concerns. She resigned in February, but the disciplinary process continued. The case was referred to the Teaching Regulation Agency. The Rehabilitation of Offenders Act allows people with spent convictions to not disclose them for most job applications.
