Trump Signs Executive Order Restricting Gender Care for Young People

US President Donald Trump has signed an executive order restricting gender-affirming care for individuals under 19, cutting federal support for such treatments. The order instructs the Health and Human Services secretary to take steps to “end the chemical and surgical mutilation of children.”

The restrictions apply to puberty blockers, hormone therapies, and surgical procedures. Federally-run insurance programs will be barred from covering gender transition treatments for minors, and medical institutions receiving federal grants will be prohibited from providing such care.

The move is expected to face legal challenges. More than 26 US states have already implemented similar restrictions.

Medical organizations, including the American Academy of Pediatrics and the American Medical Association, argue that gender-affirming care is necessary. However, scientific debate over medical interventions for minors continues, with several European countries conducting reviews on the subject.

Transgender rights groups condemned the order, calling it an attack on essential healthcare. “Today’s order lays out a clear plan to shut down access to life-saving medical care for transgender youth,” said Chase Strangio of the ACLU.

Conversely, conservative groups praised the decision. The Alliance Defending Freedom called it “a refreshing return to sanity.”
