The U.S. Department of Education (ED) has officially dropped its claims against Alaska’s education funding practices under the Maintenance of Equity (MOEquity) provision, marking a significant victory for the state.
Governor Mike Dunleavy praised the outcome, stating, “This marks the end of a saga that was a tremendous waste of time and resources. Alaska was not going to back down because we knew we were right. This case highlights the federal government’s overreach and reinforces my support for eliminating the U.S. Department of Education.”
Alaska Education Commissioner Dr. Deena Bishop called it “a triumphant day for Alaska’s students.” She added, “Our bipartisan funding formula has been recognized as one of the most equitable in the nation. The federal government’s concession proves that we are putting Alaska’s children first.”
The conflict stemmed from the Maintenace of Equity (MOEquity) requirement in the American Rescue Plan Act, aimed at protecting low-income school districts from disproportionate budget cuts. The ED alleged Alaska provided inadequate funding to urban districts, implying it favored rural areas. However, Alaska’s funding formula, already approved by the ED, was applied fairly, and the state did not cut education funding.
