13 Infants Hospitalized After Botulism Linked to Recalled Baby Formula

Federal and state health authorities are investigating 13 cases of infant botulism across 10 states, all linked to recalled ByHeart Whole Nutrition Infant Formula.
The company has agreed to recall two specific lots—206VABP/251261P2 and 206VABP/251131P2—following the hospitalization of the affected infants. Cases have been reported in Arizona, California, Illinois, Minnesota, New Jersey, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Texas, and Washington. No deaths have occurred.
The FDA and CDC are working to determine how the contamination happened and whether additional products could be affected. The recalled formula, sold online and through major retailers, accounts for approximately 1% of national formula sales.
Families who purchased the product are urged to note the lot number before discarding or returning it. Any surfaces or items that came into contact with the formula should be cleaned with a dishwasher or hot, soapy water.
Parents and caregivers are advised to seek medical care immediately if an infant who consumed the recalled formula develops poor feeding, loss of head control, difficulty swallowing, or decreased facial expression. Because symptoms of infant botulism can take weeks to appear, continued vigilance is recommended.
This incident reinforces every child’s right to the highest attainable standard of health and to safe, nutritious food, as protected under the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child.
