In a powerful moment of youth advocacy, 14-year-old, teenager Joy Ogah took the symbolic seat of Nigeria’s Vice President Kashim Shettima for a day, using the opportunity to amplify the voices of girls across the nation.

During the symbolic handover, held in partnership with PLAN International, Ogah spoke passionately about the urgent need to address the education crisis affecting girls. She reminded leaders that over 10.5 million children remain out of school in Nigeria, with girls making up more than 60% of that number.

Calling for safe, inclusive, and equitable education, Ogah urged the government to provide free sanitary products in schools, ensure access to clean water and nutrition, and implement policies that empower girls. “Every girl deserves a classroom, a choice, dignity, and not silence,” she declared.

Vice President Shettima commended her advocacy, reaffirming the government’s commitment to girl-child education and inclusivity, noting that the administration will continue its collaboration with PLAN International to strengthen educational opportunities for all children.

Ogah’s message aligns closely with Nigeria’s broader efforts to promote gender equality in education, supported by initiatives such as the Renewed Hope Social Impact Interventions (RH-SII774) and recent education reforms focused on access and empowerment.

Her words serve as a reminder that real change begins with listening to the next generation, the children whose futures depend on today’s policies.

Every child has the right to education, participation, and dignity. Her ability to serve as Vice President for a day is a reminder that every child has the right to be heard, to lead, and to shape the future.
