48 Gombe Children Allegedly Trafficked Abroad: Governor’s Revelation Sparks National Outrage and Urgent Questions on Child Protection Failures

Governor Inuwa Yahaya has raised a grave alarm that 48 children between the ages of two and five have allegedly been stolen and trafficked from Gombe State to unknown destinations abroad, sparking urgent child protection concerns.

Speaking during a Ramadan palliative distribution exercise, the governor disclosed that while the parents of the affected children remain in the state, the whereabouts of the victims are unknown.

He linked the disturbing trend to emerging security threats and cited a recent attempted abduction at Orji Estate following the relaxation of the state’s motorcycle ban. Although that child was rescued, the governor warned that criminal networks may be exploiting policy shifts to target vulnerable minors.

From a safeguarding perspective, the alleged trafficking of toddlers represents a severe protection failure. Children aged two to five are in a critical stage of development and are entirely dependent on adult care.

Forced separation at this stage can cause lasting emotional trauma, attachment disorders, and developmental setbacks. If trafficked across borders, they face risks of exploitation, abuse, forced labour, and identity loss.

The wider impact is already being felt across communities. Fear among parents may limit children’s freedom, reduce school attendance, and heighten anxiety.

Child protection advocates stress that beyond law enforcement, urgent measures are needed, including strengthened surveillance systems, improved birth registration, community vigilance structures, and cross-border cooperation to prevent further disappearances and safeguard every child’s right to safety and development.
