In a significant achievement for public healthcare in Madhya Pradesh, PC Sethi Civil Hospital in Indore has successfully delivered a baby girl weighing 5.43 kilograms, the heaviest newborn ever recorded in a government-run hospital in the state.

The case, which involved a high-risk cesarean section, drew attention for both the medical challenges it presented and the hospital’s ability to manage them with expertise and care.

The mother, 24-year-old Reeta, was undergoing her first pregnancy under severe medical conditions, including pre-eclampsia and generalized edema, with dangerously high blood pressure. Due to the baby’s unusually large size and the mother’s critical condition, doctors opted for a cesarean delivery.

Led by Dr. Komal Vijayvargiya and supported by anesthesiologist Dr. Sunita Bhatnagar, the surgical team ensured a safe outcome. Both mother and baby are now stable and recovering well.

Hospital officials confirmed that this birth sets a new record in the state, surpassing a 5.1 kg delivery in 2021. The successful handling of this complex case reflects the growing capabilities of government hospitals, supported by schemes like the Janani Suraksha Yojana.

Improved infrastructure, specialized staff, and access to free care are transforming public healthcare, making advanced maternal and child services more accessible to all.

This birth reinforces the fundamental right to health for every child, which the hospital has demonstrated through timely and specialized care for a high-risk pregnancy, leading to a successful birth. Access to quality healthcare from the moment of birth lays the foundation for a child’s survival, growth, and well-being.
