Dr. Muhammad Idris, Executive Secretary of the National Commission for Almajiri and Out-of-School Children’s Education, announced that there are at least 30 million Almajiri and 20 million out-of-school children in urgent need of support. During the inauguration of a committee to reform Almajiri education, he emphasized the importance of providing these children with guidance and a sense of belonging, highlighting their vulnerability to social vices.
Dr. Muhammad Idris stressed that it is unacceptable for children to be abandoned for begging in Nigeria. He noted that Almajiri groups have over 2,000 leadership bodies, making it challenging for the government to effectively engage with them. To address this, he called for modern educational approaches and the need for unified leadership among Almajiri associations. He tasked a newly formed committee with consolidating these groups and streamlining collaboration with the National Commission for Almajiri and Out-of-School Children’s Education.
Dr. Muhammad Idris expressed confidence that 60% of Almajiri children would be integrated into the Tsangaya education system by the end of the administration, once new measures are implemented. He gave a committee three weeks to complete its assignment and revealed ongoing discussions with state governments to take over integrated Almajiri schools established by the Universal Basic Education Commission. Sheik Sayyadi Alqasim, the committee chairman, committed to fulfilling the task efficiently and thanked the government for the opportunity.
