From today until 11th February, the UK observes Sexual Abuse and Sexual Violence Awareness Week — a national effort to raise awareness, share experiences of people who survived abuse, and encourage dialogue about sexual abuse and violence.

Sexual abuse and violence can happen to anyone, regardless of age, gender, sexuality, ethnicity, disability, or background. While men and boys can be affected persons, research shows that most people are women and girls, and the majority of perpetrators are men.

Some key statistics:

  • 1 in 3 women worldwide experience physical or sexual violence, mostly by an intimate partner (UN Women)
  • 41% of UK girls aged 14–17 in a relationship have experienced sexual violence from their partner (Refuge)
  • 1 in 2 rapes against women are committed by a current or former partner (Rape Crisis England & Wales)
  • 91% of those prosecuted for sexual offences are men aged 18+ (Rape Crisis England & Wales)
  • 6 in 7 rapes against women are committed by someone the affected person knows (Rape Crisis England & Wales)

Support is available:

  • Emergency: Call 999, or use the Silent Solution if you cannot speak.
  • Brighton & Hove: RISE offers specialized support for women, girls, mothers, LGBTQ+ people, older women, disabled women, and Black and minoritised women.
  • Elsewhere in England: Call Rape Crisis England & Wales Support Line at 0808 500 2222 or start an online chat.
  • Abuse by a partner or family member: Call the National Domestic Abuse Helpline at 0808 2000 247.
  • Guidance is available for friends and family who are supporting someone experiencing abuse.

RISE emphasizes the importance of creating safe spaces, raising awareness, and providing non-judgmental support to people who have experienced sexual abuse and sexual violence.

This story underscores the critical right of children to protection from sexual abuse and exploitation. Children have the right to live free from harm, to access support and counseling, and to have their voices heard in matters affecting their safety.
