Richard Jackson, a 100-year-old World War II veteran from Townshend, Vermont, was awarded France’s highest honour (the Legion d’Honneur) for his service in liberating the town of Bitche and surrounding villages with the 100th infantry division. Despite his modesty in acknowledging his entire company’s role, the award highlights his significant contributions. The recognition was influenced by a letter from Karsten Olsen, a dual citizen and seventh grader, whose grandparents were liberated by Jackson’s division. Previously honoured with two Bronze Stars by the U.S. Army, Jackson also had a successful post-war career and remains active, emphasising the importance of staying active and reading.
