Juleus Ghunta, a published children’s author and award-winning poet, struggled with reading as a child in rural Western Jamaica. Raised by a single mother, he often stayed home from school due to limited resources. When he finally attended school, he faced significant reading challenges and unsupportive teachers. At age 12, a young teacher-in-training started a special reading program for struggling students, and Ghunta was the first to join. This patient and creative teacher helped him improve his reading skills and regain his confidence. Ghunta later excelled academically, attended college, and became a successful author. He still hopes to find and thank the teacher who changed his life.
