In Odessa, Texas, millions of students are taking the STAAR test, which is now graded using AI for open-ended questions, a change implemented by the Texas Education Agency. This new method replaces third-party contractors and saves the state over ten million dollars. ECISD Superintendent Dr. Scott Muri is not surprised by this development due to AI’s growing sophistication. However, Rep. Brooks Landgraf, who has long criticized the STAAR test, expresses concerns over its high costs, stress on students and teachers, and its accuracy in assessing student abilities. While the use of AI was communicated to districts, the extent of its role was unclear, leading to concerns after initial AI grading resulted in more zero scores on prompts.
