Houston ISD will start the new school year with 748 fewer teachers than last year, totaling 10,640 teachers compared to 11,388 previously. State-appointed Superintendent Mike Miles attributed the reduction to declining student enrollment and the need to align staffing with actual enrollment numbers. Since August 2023, 1,400 employees left due to performance issues, and over 1,400 central office positions were eliminated, along with thousands of vacant positions.
