Robert Englebretson, a lifelong book enthusiast and braille reader, highlights the significant benefits of braille literacy, including academic and employment success for the blind and visually impaired. However, the U.S. faces a shortage of qualified braille teachers, leading to inadequate instruction for many students. Englebretson, now a linguistics professor at Rice University, is working with cognitive neuroscientist Simon Fischer-Baum and educator Cay Holbrook to address this issue. Their goal is to enhance braille education by ensuring consistent, high-quality instruction for all braille readers.
