Massachusetts schools that have significantly reduced chronic absenteeism are being recognized with a golden basketball signed by the 2024 Celtics championship team. Governor Maura Healey celebrated these achievements in East Boston, highlighting ongoing efforts by school districts to restore attendance levels to pre-pandemic standards. Before COVID-19, about 13% of students were chronically absent, but this number rose to 28% in 2022, and as of last March, 20% were still frequently missing school. Healey emphasized the importance of regular attendance for students’ learning, especially in the wake of the pandemic.
