In a tale that seems unbelievable but true, a child’s future has been altered by his uncle for allegedly stealing a phone. What crime could a child possibly commit to deserve such inhumane treatment from one who is supposed to protect. That’s the fate of 12-year-old Adamu who was amputated by his uncle for stealing a phone in Gombe.

This incident shocked and stirred many reactions from well-meaning individuals. The Vice Chairperson of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Gombe Branch, Mwalin Abdu, condemned the amputation of 12-year-old’s arms.

In a press statement titled “Protecting our Future: Urgent Action Needed on Child Protection in Gombe State”, Abdu, who also serves as the Chairperson of the Human Rights Committee of the NBA, highlighted the disturbing rise in child abuse cases while marking the 2024 Children’s Day.

Although, the Attorney General’s office has taken over the prosecution, Abdu stressed that more needs to be done. She called for the full implementation of the child protection law ratified in 2022 stressing that though it was a significant milestone, the lack of effective implementation continues to endanger children, leaving their lives and futures in jeopardy.

Since then the Gombe State Government has filed charges against the uncle of Adamu. This was confirmed by the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) in the Gombe State Ministry of Justice, Abubakar Jungudo to Punch Metro that the uncle will face prosecution.
