Spotlight of the Week: Orondaam Otto – Transforming Lives Through Education

Every great movement begins with a single moment of realization. For Orondaam Otto, that moment came while he was serving his country during the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) in Lagos. As he passed through the Third Mainland Bridge, his eyes caught sight of Makoko, an infamous floating slum where children lived in extreme poverty, deprived of basic education and opportunities. That encounter changed the trajectory of his life and ignited a vision that would go on to impact hundreds of thousands of children.
Faced with the overwhelming reality of Nigeria’s education crisis, Otto applied to over 150 organizations, seeking support to launch an initiative that would provide education to underserved children. Not one organization believed in his vision. But instead of giving up, Otto turned rejection into resilience, and in 2012, he founded Slum2School Africa, a volunteer-driven initiative dedicated to providing educational opportunities for children in slums and marginalized communities.
Since its inception, Slum2School has grown into one of Africa’s most impactful education-focused non-profits. Through a combination of scholarships, digital learning centers, innovation labs, and community-driven projects, the organization has:
- Provided educational support to over 627,450 children
- Built Early Childhood Development Centers and STEAM Innovation Labs
- Partnered with UNICEF, Microsoft, Dominos, ESPN, and other global brands
- Developed Africa’s first-ever Virtual Learning Classroom during the COVID-19 pandemic
Otto’s work ensures that education is not just a privilege for the few but a right for every child, regardless of their socio-economic background. He is a globally recognized leader in social impact, innovation, and policy reform. His expertise has led to several prestigious recognitions, including:
- Named one of the Global 100 Most Influential People of African Descent by the United Nations General Assembly
- Mandela Washington Fellow, where he chaired the West and Central African Regional Advisory Board for YALI, a program launched by President Barack Obama
- Member of the Human Capital Development Commission of the Nigerian Economic Summit Group
- Founding Board Member of the Lagos State Employment Trust Fund
He has also been featured on CNN African Voices, Forbes, BBC, and The Guardian, among other global platforms, highlighting his transformational work in education and community development.
Beyond his humanitarian efforts, Otto’s academic journey reflects his commitment to knowledge and leadership. He holds:
- A Master’s Degree in Public Administration from Harvard Kennedy School
- A Bachelor’s Degree in Human Anatomy from University of Port Harcourt
- An Executive Master’s in Project Management from CUPE (UK)
- Certificates in Social Change, Leadership, and Governance from top institutions like MIT, University of Stellenbosch, and Henley Business School
- At Harvard, he was recognized with the Erik Yankah Award and the Lucius Littauer Fellowship Award for his outstanding leadership and contributions to social impact.
Orondaam Otto’s vision is clear, a world where every child, regardless of their background, has access to quality education and an opportunity to thrive. His story is one of resilience, passion, and unwavering belief in the power of education.
