Students of St. John Vianney Science College, Ukwulu, Anambra, have emerged as the overall winner of the inaugural virtual UK-Nigeria Debate Championship, a significant international event that brought together top secondary schools from both countries.

Representing Nigeria alongside Britarch Schools and Sure Start School in Abuja, and St. Augustine’s College, Jos, the Anambra-based team outperformed their UK counterparts—Central Foundation Girls’ School, Maghull High School, and Shireland High School.

The competition, held virtually on Thursday, was jointly organised by Bring-It-On Africa and Debate Mate UK, to promote cross-cultural dialogue and enhance critical thinking, oratory, and reasoning skills among students.

The victorious Anambra team comprised Chibueze Jennifer, Catherine Obiokafor, Benjamin Eneoli, and Valentine Onwuegbusi, all of whom were guided by their mentor, Mr. John Onuigbo.

In a congratulatory message delivered on Saturday in Awka, the wife of the Anambra State Governor, Dr. Nonye Soludo, praised the students for bringing pride to the state and showcasing the excellence of Anambra’s education system on a global platform. She described their achievement as a clear reflection of Anambra’s commitment to human capital development and educational advancement.

“Our home is the moulding ground for exceptional talents and record-setters who are tapping greatly from the abundant opportunities that the present administration is offering,” she said.

Dr. Soludo, who is also the founder of the Healthy Living Initiative, emphasized that education remains at the core of Anambra’s development vision and commended the dedication of the staff and management of St. John Vianney Science College for nurturing students who are prepared for both academic and life challenges.

This victory stands as a proud moment for Anambra and Nigeria, demonstrating the global potential of well-supported, high-achieving students.
