Class 9 Student Gives Birth in School Washroom in Karnataka

A shocking incident has come to light from Shahapur, where a Class 9 student of a government residential school gave birth to a baby boy inside the school washroom. The delivery took place on Wednesday afternoon, but the matter only became public the following day.
The Karnataka State Commission for Protection of Child Rights member, Shashidhar Kosambe, expressed serious concern over the delay in reporting.
He directed officials to file a complaint and submit a detailed report, stating that the Commission was not informed by the school authorities and came to know of the incident only through other sources.
A suo motu complaint will now be lodged against the principal and the staff members. Both the girl and her newborn have been admitted to the Shahapur Government Hospital, where doctors have confirmed that their condition is stable.
The school principal, Basamma, said she did not know about the student’s pregnancy. She explained that she had assumed office only last month, and according to records, the girl is 17 years and 8 months old.
The student began attending classes on August 5 but remained absent on several occasions, complaining of headaches and other health problems. The principal added that the girl’s parents have avoided speaking despite repeated attempts to contact them.
This incident underscores a violation of child’s right that no person should have sexual relations with a child. Such acts are crimes, and every child has the right to protection from sexual exploitation.
