A Detroit mother has been charged with murder in connection to the death of her 14-year-old daughter. The defendant, Vangie Renee Averhart, 37, was arraigned and bond was denied. Averhart is accused of fatally assaulting her daughter on July 7, 2025. During the arraignment, prosecutors detailed disturbing findings from the medical examiner’s report, which ruled the girl’s death a homicide caused by severe blunt force trauma to the back of her head.
