Newborn Baby Allegedly Sold for N2.5m in Lagos Hospital as Police Launch Trafficking Probe

The alleged sale of a newborn baby for N2.5 million at a private hospital in Ikorodu, Lagos, has raised serious child protection and safeguarding concerns, with police investigating claims of child trafficking and conspiracy.

The Lagos State Police Command arrested a medical doctor, a traditional birth attendant, and the baby’s parents over the alleged arrangement. The investigation began after concerns emerged about the transfer of the newborn to an unidentified buyer shortly after delivery.

According to the police, the baby’s parents allegedly agreed to the arrangement before the birth and were connected to a potential buyer through intermediaries. The child was reportedly delivered through a Caesarean section after complications during labour.

The police said the arrangement later became exposed after the mother raised concerns over the payment she received. She reportedly received only N700,000 out of the agreed amount, prompting further questions about the transaction.

From a child protection perspective, the case highlights the risks children face when financial pressures, exploitation, and illegal adoption practices intersect. Every child has the right to safety, identity, and care in a secure environment.

Authorities are continuing efforts to locate the alleged buyer and ensure the baby’s safety. The Anti-Human Trafficking/Gender Unit of the Lagos State Criminal Investigation Department is handling the investigation.

Child protection experts stress the need for stronger monitoring of birth and adoption processes, increased awareness, and swift action against individuals involved in the trafficking or unlawful sale of children.
