Child Abduction

Borno School Attack: 36 Students Missing Despite Rescue Efforts, 25 Female, 11 Male

An attack on Government Day Secondary School, Lassa in Askira Uba Local Government Area of Borno State has renewed concerns over child protection and the safety of learners in conflict-affected communities.

Armed assailants reportedly invaded the school around 8:30am on Monday, targeting students and teachers. During the incident, a teacher was killed after reportedly refusing to comply with the attackers’ instructions, while another person sustained injuries and is currently receiving medical care.

A verified school register obtained by authorities shows that 36 students were affected in the incident. The list indicates that 25 of the affected students are female, while 11 are male. It further shows that 18 are in Senior Secondary 2, 17 in Senior Secondary 1, and one in Senior Secondary 3.

Child protection advocates have expressed concern over the scale of the incident, warning that repeated attacks on schools in the region continue to undermine children’s right to safe and uninterrupted education.

Lassa village, where the attack occurred, is located near other communities that have previously experienced similar mass abductions, underscoring ongoing vulnerabilities.

Local officials have confirmed the authenticity of the student register, compiled by school authorities in collaboration with parents of those affected.

As efforts continue to secure the safe return of the affected persons, stakeholders are calling for stronger school protection measures, improved early warning systems, and sustained coordination to safeguard learning environments in Borno State and other high-risk areas.
