Twelve years ago, Carmen Allen stood before Judge Charles Dortch in Camden County’s juvenile court, pleading for a second chance. At just 17 years old, she had dreams of college and law school but found herself facing the consequences of a mistake. With sincerity, she told the judge, “I want to be somebody someday. Maybe I’ll be a lawyer in your courtroom.”
Today, at 29 years old, Carmen, now Carmen Day, is a mother of two and just one semester away from graduating from Rutgers Law School in Camden, the same alma mater as Judge Dortch.
On January 7, fate brought them back together. As Day sat among a group of law students in Dortch’s courtroom, the judge had no idea she was there. After the session, she asked to speak with him privately, holding back tears as she thanked him for the second chance that changed her life.
Judge Dortch had once reduced her probation from 18 months to six, and that act of grace restored her faith in the justice system. Now, she’s preparing to step into the very world that once held her future in its hands—this time, as a future lawyer.
