Abuja Fertility Doctor Arraigned for Alleged IVF Scam, Endangering Children’s Safety and Family Rights

A fertility specialist in Abuja, Nigeria, has been arraigned on multiple charges including fraud, criminal conspiracy, and unlawful disclosure of confidential medical records, highlighting serious risks to children and families seeking reproductive care.

Prosecutors allege the doctor defrauded a couple of ₦19 million under the pretense of providing In Vitro Fertilisation (IVF) services and improperly disclosed sensitive medical information, including fertility details and embryos, without consent.

Child protection experts emphasize that breaches of reproductive and medical confidentiality can directly threaten the safety, wellbeing, and future rights of children conceived or in development through assisted reproductive services. Exploitation of families seeking fertility care raises concerns about safeguarding practices in medical facilities, particularly regarding handling embryos, medical records, and informed consent.

Advocates say this case underscores the need for stronger oversight, rigorous licensing, and robust accountability mechanisms for fertility clinics and practitioners to prevent potential harm to children before and after birth. Ensuring that parents and prospective children are protected from financial fraud, emotional trauma, and unauthorized disclosure of sensitive information is essential for upholding children’s rights, family safety, and trust in healthcare systems.

The case is set for trial on April 2, 2026, with the doctor currently released on bail under strict conditions. Authorities continue to urge vigilance in monitoring fertility clinics to safeguard children and families from abuse and malpractice.
