In a landmark ruling by the Sexual and Gender-Based Violence Court in Awka, Anambra State, Justice Peace Otti sentenced 34-year-old teacher Pascal Ofomata to 12 years in prison for sexually abusing his 11-year-old male student.

The ruling marks a significant stand against violence targeting boys, a demographic often overlooked in abuse cases.

Ofomata, who taught at St. Christopher’s Junior Seminary, was convicted under the Violence Against Persons Prohibition Law and the Child’s Right Law, following evidence from investigators and medical professionals. Despite pleading not guilty, his statement acknowledged actions amounting to sexual abuse.

In addition to his prison term, he is permanently barred from working in any institution involving children. Justice Otti commended the prosecution’s diligence and emphasized the rare yet vital delivery of justice in such cases.

State Commissioner Ify Obinabo praised the outcome, calling it a bold message that boys, too, can be sexually abused and deserve justice.
