Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has applauded the incredible journey of Mary Zira, a young girl once displaced by conflict in northeast Nigeria, who has now emerged as a world-class chess champion.

In a post shared on his official X (formerly Twitter) account, Atiku praised Mary’s remarkable transformation and recognized the impact of the Feed and Read programme by the American University of Nigeria in shaping her future.

The story of Mary Zira is a story of opportunity and hope. From uncertainty, today she’s a world-class chess champion,” Atiku wrote.

He further emphasized the need to support children affected by insecurity across the country, saying,

There are many more Marys whose future continues to be ruined by the devastation of insecurity. Little efforts by good-spirited individuals and organisations can make a big difference.”

Mary’s story stands as a powerful testament to resilience, education, and opportunity, and serves as a beacon of hope for countless other children facing similar hardships.
