Denmark to Allow AI in High School English Exams
Denmark has announced that from 2026, some high school students will be allowed to use artificial intelligence (AI) to prepare for the oral component of their English exams.
Under the new pilot scheme, once a student receives their exam topic, they will have one hour to prepare, during which they can use all available tools, including generative AI. The oral presentation, however, must still be delivered in person before an examiner.
Education Minister Mattias Tesfaye explained that the move is part of efforts to strike the right balance between embracing digital learning and maintaining teaching standards. He noted that students are growing up in both analogue and digital worlds, and education must prepare them for the realities they will face after school.
While AI will be allowed during oral exam preparation, the ministry stressed that the written part of the English test will continue to include sections done entirely by hand.
This, officials say, will ensure originality, reduce over-reliance on digital tools, and help students develop their own authentic style of writing. Participation in the AI scheme will be voluntary for schools that choose to adopt it.
