Edo Rallies to Shield Its Children: Government, EU and Stakeholders Unite to Crack Down on Abuse and Secure Every Child’s Future

The Edo State Government has reaffirmed its strong commitment to child protection, placing safeguarding at the center of its education and social development agenda.
Speaking at the SOS Children’s Villages Nigeria Community Annual Town Hall Meeting in Benin City, Commissioner for Education, Hon. Dr. Paddy Emmanuel Iyamu, stressed that protecting children is not optional but a shared duty across families, institutions, and government agencies.
Represented by the Director of School Support Services, Mr. Ikoghode Abudukadiri, the Commissioner emphasized that every child deserves safety, quality education, and an environment free from abuse and neglect. He called for practical and inclusive strategies that move beyond discussion to measurable action, urging communities to unite in defending the rights and dignity of children.
A major highlight of the event was the recognition of the European Union-supported Strengthening Child Care and Protection Systems in Nigeria project. .
The initiative seeks to improve enforcement of the Child Rights Law, strengthen alternative care systems, and build community-based protection structures to reduce abuse and exploitation.
The Federal Commissioner of the Public Complaints Commission in Edo State, Hon. Austine Aigbavboa, also underscored the urgency of addressing child maltreatment. He reaffirmed the commission’s readiness to provide free services and collaborate with civil society organizations to ensure justice and protection for vulnerable children.
Stakeholders collectively called for stronger security measures in schools and communities, reinforcing the message that safeguarding children today secures Edo State’s future.
