Ekiti Pupils, Teachers Forced to Scoop Water from Flooded Classrooms After Roof Collapse

Teachers and pupils of Wesley United Primary School, Iworo, Omuo-Ekiti, Ekiti East Local Government Area, Ekiti State, are crying out for urgent intervention after the school building lost its roof, leaving classrooms waterlogged, unsafe, and uninhabitable.
A disturbing video appeal shows children wading through flooded classrooms while teachers struggle to scoop water from slimy green floors.
According to the distressed staff, learning has become impossible since the roof collapsed, as both teachers and pupils now spend their school hours fetching water instead of engaging in lessons.
“Here is one of our classes. We don’t have a place to stay. Help us. Look at our roof. The students and teachers are all packing water. Look at how green the floor is. Please don’t let the building fall on us,” one teacher pleaded.
Another staff member described how they spent the entire Monday morning draining water, fearing the structure could collapse at any moment and bury the children beneath the rubble.
Community members also expressed deep concern, calling the situation “a disaster waiting to happen.” They lamented that the classrooms, now stripped bare of roofing sheets, are at the mercy of rainfall, while stagnant green water poses serious health risks to the children.
“This is no longer a school but a ticking time bomb,” one parent warned. “We are afraid to send our children here because the building can collapse. But where else can they go?”
Residents further revealed that appeals to local authorities have been ignored for years. Politicians, they said, have repeatedly visited, made promises, and disappeared without delivering solutions. Now, with the roof completely gone, the children are left to suffer in dangerous and humiliating conditions.
Parents, teachers, and community leaders are calling on Governor Biodun Oyebanji of Ekiti State to intervene, restore learning, and save lives urgently. They are also appealing to the Ministry of Education, international aid agencies, and philanthropists to step in where the government has failed.
This situation at Wesley United Primary School violates the child’s right to education and to a safe learning environment. Every child has the right not only to attend school, but to learn in safety, a right that must not be denied.
