Excitement AS Curtain Falls On 9th Edition Of 2024 PWC Chess4Change Competition

The 2024 PWC Chess4Change competition, held in Lagos, concluded with excitement and praise for both the organizers and the participating students from various public secondary schools. In its ninth edition, the event featured several schools competing in chess, with Kehinde Adejobi from Ajayi Crowther Memorial Senior Grammar School emerging as the overall winner.
Mr. Fela Bank-Olemoh, CEO of Media Vision, reflected on the competition’s impact over the past nine years, highlighting its success in discovering and nurturing talented students. He expressed pride in the initiative, which has consistently unearthed promising young talents through the PWC Chess4Change Grand highlighting its impact on students over the years.
He emphasized that while talent is widespread, discovering and nurturing it is the real challenge. The competition has boosted students’ confidence and critical thinking, improving their overall performance in school. With the upcoming tenth edition, he noted the event’s long-standing corporate sponsorship in Nigeria and its positive influence on students’ development.
Yinka Yusuf, Partner at PwC Nigeria, praised the transformative effect of Chess4Change, noting that chess is not just a game but a tool for building future leaders by enhancing critical thinking and problem-solving skills. He also acknowledged the vital role of various stakeholders, including the Lagos State Government, Ministry of Education, and others, in ensuring the success of the initiative.
Prince Adeyinka Adewole, Vice President of the Nigerian Chess Federation, praised PWC and Media Vision for their consistent support of the Chess4Change competition. He highlighted the event’s focus on public schools in Lagos State, with 18 schools participating this year, and noted the significant positive impact on students. Adewole expressed excitement for the upcoming tenth edition, anticipating even more impressive results.
He emphasized the benefits of chess in developing critical thinking, concentration, and decision-making skills, explaining that students who play chess tend to perform better intellectually compared to those who don’t. Adewole encouraged everyone to engage with chess, noting that it not only sharpens the mind but also helps keep young people away from crime, as chess fosters intellectual development and discipline.
Dr. (Mrs.) Oluwasanmi Oluyomi, Director of Lagos State School Sports, praised the PWC Chess4Change competition for its positive impact on students. She emphasized that chess helps develop critical thinking, reduces juvenile delinquency, and improves academic performance, enabling children to realize their full potential. She also highlighted that Lagos’ success at the National School Games, where students won a gold and silver, was partly due to the critical thinking skills gained through chess.
Kehinde Adejobi, the competition’s overall winner, expressed his excitement, saying the experience was more valuable than the win itself, as it boosted his confidence. He shared that this was his first chess victory and looked forward to participating in more tournaments to improve his skills and mentor younger players.
