FCT Pupils Forced to Learn on Bare Floors Despite UBEC Funding, Raising Concerns Over Right to Education

Pupils at LEA Primary School, Dupka in Gwagwalada, Federal Capital Territory (FCT), are reportedly forced to learn on bare floors in overcrowded classrooms, with little to no access to desks, chairs, or essential learning materials. The conditions raise serious concerns about the violation of children’s right to quality education, despite billions of naira released by the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC) for public schools.
A recent report by MonITng highlights the sharp contrast between official claims of school renovations and the reality on the ground. According to the organisation, classrooms are poorly ventilated, resources are limited, and overcrowding makes it difficult for teachers to provide individual attention, negatively affecting pupils’ participation, comprehension, and overall learning outcomes.
“While authorities celebrate progress on paper, children at LEA Primary School struggle daily in conditions that strip them of dignity and their right to a proper education,” MonITng stated. The organisation also noted that mismanagement of public education funds has worsened the situation, with local authorities allegedly diverting resources to political interests while community schools remain neglected.
MonITng has called on the Minister of the FCT, Nyesom Wike, and Senator Ireti Kingibe to take urgent action, emphasizing that children deserve learning environments that reflect the investments made in public education. The report warns that without immediate intervention, pupils’ safety, well-being, and fundamental rights to quality education will continue to be compromised.
