Federal Government Slams Door on SS3 Admissions, Moves to Crush Exam Malpractice Nationwide

The Federal Government has imposed a nationwide ban on the admission and transfer of students into Senior Secondary School Three in both public and private secondary schools, citing persistent concerns over examination malpractice.

The directive was issued by the Federal Ministry of Education in a statement released on Sunday and signed by the Director of Press and Public Relations, Boriowo Folasade.

According to the ministry, the decision follows growing evidence of abuse linked to last-minute student movement ahead of external examinations, particularly the use of so-called special centres. Officials say the practice has continued to erode confidence in the integrity of Nigeria’s examination system.

Under the new policy, which takes effect from the 2026/2027 academic session, admissions and transfers into senior secondary schools will be permitted only at Senior Secondary School One and Senior Secondary School Two. Entry into SS3 will no longer be allowed under any circumstance.

“The policy will take effect from the 2026/2027 academic calendar, with admissions and transfers now restricted strictly to SS1 and SS2. Admission or transfer into SS3 will no longer be permitted,” the statement said.

The ministry explained that frequent transfers at the final stage of secondary education have been linked to sharp practices aimed at securing unfair advantages during examinations. It added that limiting student movement would strengthen academic monitoring, ensure continuity in teaching, and promote fair assessment of learners.

School proprietors, principals, and administrators across the country have been directed to comply fully with the directive. The ministry warned that any breach would attract sanctions in line with existing education laws and guidelines.

Reaffirming the Federal Government’s commitment to improving educational standards, the ministry said the measure forms part of broader efforts to restore public trust in national examinations and safeguard the credibility of certificates issued by Nigerian schools.
